How to Install Solus Budgie Linux on PC - Full Disk Installation using USB Flash Drive

Recently I wrote about
BlueStar Linux. In this tutorial, we’ll see how to install Solus Budgie Linux on Computer as main OS.

Solus is one of the fastest growing free and open source Linux distributions out there and that is currently used by many users and getting a huge audience in the community of Linux. So the reason why Solus, is unlike other Linux distros, Solus OS is independent, it’s entirely written from scratch like Debian, Arch Linux, Red Hat. Solus is considered an independent Linux distro that uses its native package manage. Budgie DE is the default desktop environment of Solus that is derived from gnome stacks. Like other distros.

Solus is released as a rolling distribution which means you will have to install the OS once and it will get updated lifetime. There is nothing like End-of-life (EOL) for rolling distributions unlike standard distributions that have a set EOL when updates will be stopped and a new version will have to installed.

In this article, we are going to see the process of installing Solus by creating Live USB and going through the graphical installer.

There are four different desktop versions available:

Budgie A lightweight desktop originally developed by the Solus creators (before it was called Solus, when it was Evolve OS), now also distributed by and contributed to by a number of other distributions including Arch Linux, Manjaro, openSUSE, Ubuntu Budgie and others. The Solus developers have done an amazingly good job over the years of sticking to their original principles of simplicity and elegance. I consider Budgie to be the "native" desktop for Solus, in the same way that I think of Cinnamon for Linux Mint.

GNOME The opposite of a lightweight desktop. If your computer has a lot of CPU power and a lot of memory, and you are not tied to the traditional desktop (taskbar/panel) paradigm, this might be interesting for you. It isn't for me.

MATE A light(er)weight desktop originally developed to continue the GNOME 2 desktop, when it was unceremoniously dropped and users were told to switch to GNOME 3 whether they liked it or not. A lot of users were (and still are) in the "or not" category, and MATE has become a very popular desktop which is offered by a lot of Linux distributions.

Plasma
An advanced, flexible, but certainly not lightweight desktop. To be honest, when everything else is equal (i.e. when I am using a distribution which I don't think of as having a "native" desktop such as Budgie or Cinnamon), this is the desktop that I prefer.

As with many (most) Linux distributions, the Live image is a complete Solus Linux system, so you can poke around, and try this out to make sure that it supports all of your hardware, and whether you like it enough to go ahead and install it on your disk drive, in this article i will install Solus Budgie.

PRE-REQUISITES
  1. 10 GB of free space on the disk.
  2. 64-bit system architecture.
  3. 2 GB of RAM.
  4. Empty USB stick at least 8 GB storage.
  5. Balena Etcher Installed in the system. You can also use any other application that can create a bootable disk such as Rufus.

DOWNLOAD SOLUS OS LINUX AND ETCHER TOOL

You need an ISO image of Solus Budgie Linux. You can Download it from the Official Solus Linux download page. You also need a 16GB USB drive which will be used as a bootable installation medium.

To install Solus Budgie Linux, you need to write your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to create the installation media. This is not the same as copying the ISO, and requires some bespoke software.

For this tutorial, we’ll use balenaEtcher, as it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Choose the version that corresponds to your current operating system, download and install the tool.

CREATE A BOOTABLE USB STICK

Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: Double-click on the balenaEtcher download file to run the app. Press Flash from file to select the downloaded Solus Budgie ISO file on your computer.

Step 3: Press Select target and choose the correct USB flash drive from the list.

Step 4: Press Flash! to begin writing Solus Budgie Linux to the USB flash drive.

After a few minutes, the USB flash drive will be ready for booting into Solus Budgie Linux.

INSTALLING SOLUS OS BUDGIE LINUX STEP BY STEP

Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: While the system would restart and initialize start pressing F9 (or Del or F10 or F12 or Esc) to display Boot Menu. The key could be different on different make and model, try other keys as per Make and Model of your machine.

Step 3: From the Boot Menu, select Flash Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter. It may be at different serial number in different systems. Wait for the system to Boot from the Flash Drive.

Step 4: Now the computer will boot from the system image and Solus would be launched.

Step 5: Now that we have launched a live system image of Solus, click the icon that says Launch Install OS to begin the Solus installation.

Step 6: Now the first thing that installer is asking is to select the language for system. Here we would select English (United Stated) then click Next.

Step 7: Now we need to check whether we want our feed our location automatically in the system or not. Providing location automatically is usually helpful to speed some services, then click Next.

Step 8: Here we need to select the keyboard layout that we use. For most people, it is English (US), so we would select that and click Next button.

Step 9: We would provide our time zone here, so that system could show time and date accordingly, then click Next.

Step 10: In this screen, we have to select the disk where we want to install Solus. You can select the disk of your choice and Remember it will be delete everything in your Disk, then click Next.

Step 11: Following the Disk selection, we get the option to use Logical Volume Management in our installation. It allows users to resize the disk space in an easier way rather than having to unmount it and convert it to a live disk, then click Next.

Step 12: In this part, you will provide a name to computer on which we are installing Solus (Install a bootloader, must be checked), and click Next.

Step 13: Now, we need to create an administrator user of the system by filling all these details Username, Real name and password then click Add now.

Step 14: After it is done you can create another user who will use this system or click Next.

Step 15: Here we get to see a summary of all the options we have selected for the installation, after reviewing them all we will click the Install button.

Step 16: It will ask for confirmation that you want to delete all the data that is currently on the selected disk and install Solus, click OK.

Step 17: The installation will take a few moments. Grab a coffee and relax for 10 to 20 minutes while Solus is installed.

Step 18: After installation is complete, you need to click Restart Now. One thing to remember while rebooting the system is that we must remove the installation media USB so that it does not boot again from the ISO file.

Step 19: Login to newly installed Solus Linux.

So, this was all to the Solus installation, now we take a look around and use Solus.
