How to Install Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS Desktop on PC - Clean Install Using Bootable USB Drive


Recently I wrote about Ubuntu Mate 21.10. In this tutorial, we’ll see how to install Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS on Computer as main OS.

Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS is a long term supported release from Ubuntu Budgie. Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 with code name Focal Fossa was released on 23rd April 2020 along with Ubuntu and other official community flavours. As an LTS release of Ubuntu flavour, Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 will be supported for next 3 years.

The Budgie Desktop is one of the latest and modern Gnome-based desktop that gives a minimal and elegant desktop experience and is available for all major Linux distributions. It is designed in such a way that it utilizes fewer system resources.

Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS is a community developed and open source graphical desktop environment based on GNOME 3 desktop environment. It is very fast, lightweight. It is good for old and new computers. Still it looks very good.

Budgie desktop has a straight forward app launcher that is known as Budgie menu that contains a lot of apps for you to work on and be productive. It offers an easy and quick way to search and launch apps with features like category based filtering and type as you search options.

Budgie also includes a sidebar that can be accessed by clicking on the rightmost icons in the panel where you can view a calendar, notifications, and settings to control elements on the desktop.

You can experience many other features after installing and using the Budgie desktop. In today’s article, we will see how to install Budgie desktop in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Processor speed: 2.4Ghz
Memory: 4GB of RAM
Hard Disk space: 60GB

DOWNLOAD UBUNTU BUDGIE 20.04 LTS LINUX AND ETCHER TOOL

You need an ISO image of Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS. You can Download it from the Official Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS download page. You also need a 16GB USB drive which will be used as a bootable installation medium.


Next click on Direct Download.


To install Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS Linux, you need to write your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to create the installation media. This is not the same as copying the ISO, and requires some bespoke software.

For this tutorial, we’ll use balenaEtcher, as it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Choose the version that corresponds to your current operating system, download and install the tool.



CREATE A BOOTABLE USB STICK

Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: Double-click on the balenaEtcher download file to run the app. Press Flash from file to select the downloaded Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS ISO file on your computer.


Step 3: Press Select target and choose the correct USB flash drive from the list.


Step 4: Press Flash! to begin writing Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS Linux to the USB flash drive.


After a few minutes, the USB flash drive will be ready for booting into Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS Linux.

BOOTING FROM THE USB FLASH DRIVE AND INSTALLING UBUNTU BUDGIE 20.04 LTS

Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: While the system would restart and initialize start pressing F9 (or Del or F10 or F12 or Esc) to display Boot Menu. The key could be different on different make and model, try other keys as per Make and Model of your machine.

Step 3: From the Boot Menu, select Flash Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter. It may be at different serial number in different systems. Wait for the system to Boot from the Flash Drive.


Step 4: Once you boot, you should see the following menu. Select Try Ubuntu Budgie.


Step 5: You should see the following window. This is the Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS Live session. Try and see if your hardware works. If you like it and you want to install it on your hard drive, click Install Now in Ubuntu Budgie welcome screen or click on Install Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.3 icon.


Step 6: The installer should show up. Select your language and click on Continue.


Step 7: Select your Keyboard layout and click on Continue.


Step 8: Now select either Normal installation or Minimal installation. If you select Minimal installation, then only the most basic utilities will be installed. If you select Normal installation, all the default softwares will be installed. Minimal installation takes less disk space than Normal installation. If you want to install third party softwares for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and media codes, then mark the checkbox like in the picture below. Once you’re done, click on Continue.


Step 9: If you have an empty hard drive, you may click on Erase disk and install Ubuntu Budgie, this will format your whole hard drive and install Ubuntu Budgie in it, then click on Continue.


Step 10: Then click on Continue.


Step 11: Select your location and click on Continue.


Step 12: Now type in your personal details. your name, your computer name and a strong password then click on Continue.


Step 13: Sit back and wait the installation should start.


Step 14: Now Once the installation is complete, Click Restart Now.


Step 15: If you see the following window, remove USB Flash Drive and press Enter.


Step 16: You should be booted into your new Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS. Type in your login password and press Enter.


Step 17: Now click on the exit icon as marked in the screenshot below.

UPDATE AND UPGRADE UBUNTU BUDGIE 20.04 LTS OPERATING SYSTEM

The first thing you need to do after installing Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 LTS is updating your system. Even though you just installed it, the ISO you used might have been old. As such, there should be some pending updates for the installed software and packages.

Let’s launch the terminal, right click on Desktop and tap Open in Terminal.


let’s try and update the system using:

sudo apt-get update

Followed by your password.


Now try this:

sudo apt-get upgrade


Pay attention to the progress of the Terminal and enter  Y  when needed.
