Ubuntu MATE is a stable, easy-to-use operating system with a configurable desktop environment. It is ideal for those who want the most out of their computers and prefer a traditional desktop metaphor. With modest hardware requirements it is suitable for modern workstations, single board computers and older hardware alike. Ubuntu MATE makes modern computers fast and old computers usable.
Ubuntu’s MATE Desktop edition is famous for being lightweight, fast, and stable, a community-driven project, and a great alternative to Ubuntu’s stock Gnome. At the end of the tutorial, you will have learned how to install Ubuntu MATE 21.10 on your computer.
MATE is an excellent choice for a lower-end system or those looking to remain efficient on system resources. Also, a dedicated Ubuntu MATE edition exists for this desktop environment, which may entice users to switch from Ubuntu altogether.
You can guess the popularity of MATE desktop from the fact that Ubuntu MATE is one of the official Ubuntu flavors. Even Linux Mint has a MATE version.

DOWNLOAD UBUNTU MATE 21.10 LINUX AND ETCHER TOOL
INSTALLING UBUNTU MATE 21.10 IMPISH INDRI
Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.
Step 2: While the system would restart and initialize start pressing F9 (or Del or F10 or F12 or Esc) to display Boot Menu. The key could be different on different make and model, try other keys as per Make and Model of your machine.
Step 3: From the Boot Menu, select Flash Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter. It may be at different serial number in different systems. Wait for the system to Boot from the Flash Drive.
Step 4: Once you boot from your bootable media, you should see the following window. Select Ubuntu MATE and press Enter.
You need an ISO image of Ubuntu MATE 21.10. You can Download it from the Official Ubuntu MATE download page. You also need a 16GB USB drive which will be used as a bootable installation medium.
Next you will go to next page and click on Direct Download.
To install Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri Linux, you need to write your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to create the installation media. This is not the same as copying the ISO, and requires some bespoke software.
For this tutorial, we’ll use balenaEtcher, as it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Choose the version that corresponds to your current operating system, download and install the tool.
CREATE A BOOTABLE USB STICK
Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.
Step 2: Double-click on the balenaEtcher download file to run the app. Press Flash from file to select the downloaded Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri ISO file on your computer.
Step 3: Press Select target and choose the correct USB flash drive from the list.
Step 4: Press Flash! to begin writing Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri Linux to the USB flash drive.

Step 5: Now select your language, then click on the Install Ubuntu MATE to install Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri on your computer.
Step 6: Now select your Keyboard layout and click on Continue.
Step 7: Now select either Minimal installation or Normal installation. If you want to install third party softwares for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and media codes, then mark the checkbox like in the picture below. Once you’re done, click on Continue.
Step 8: Select Erase disk and install Ubuntu MATE if you want to erase your entire hard drive and install Ubuntu MATE Impish Indri. If you want more flexibility in partitioning or do dual booting, then select Something else then click on Install Now.
Step 9: Click on Continue.
Step 10: Now select your location and click on Continue.
Step 11: Now type in your personal details your name, your computer name and a strong password then click on Continue.
Step 12: Sit back and wait the installation should start.
Step 13: Once the installation is complete, click on Restart Now.
Step 14: Remove the bootable USB drive and press ENTER.
Step 15: Your computer should be restarted. Now select your user and type in the password and then press Enter.
Step 16: You should be logged in to your MATE desktop environment of Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri.

UPDATE AND UPGRADE UBUNTU MATE 21.10 IMPISH INDRI OPERATING SYSTEM
The first thing you need to do after installing Ubuntu MATE 21.10 Impish Indri is updating your system. Even though you just installed it, the ISO you used might have been old. As such, there should be some pending updates for the installed software and packages.
Click on the Launcher icon on the taskbar and look for Terminal or by right click on Desktop and tap Open in Terminal.
let’s try and update the system using:
sudo apt-get update
Followed by your password.
sudo apt-get update
Followed by your password.
Now try this:
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get upgrade
