How to Install Manjaro Cutefish Linux on PC - Full Disk Installation Step by Step Guide

Cutefish is a beautiful desktop environment built with Qt Quick. Straight away you’ll be reminded of macOS which is where I think a lot of the inspiration for this desktop was born from. You get a nice floating dock at the bottom to pin your applications and a panel at the top where you can get to a control centre like area with quick toggles for things like WiFi and Bluetooth.

CuteFishOS’s stated goal is to “make a better experience desktop OS”. To do that they’re building a new desktop environment (‘CuteFishDE’) using KDE Frameworks, Qt, and KDE Plasma 5. This desktop will sit at the heart of a new Linux distro called CuteFishOS.

The desktop experience caters to “beginners”, rather than power users. As such, the devs have no (current) plans to add complex, edge-case, or convoluted settings and features. Like Ubuntu, the aim is to provide a basic set of sane defaults that “just work” for most users.

The application launcher sits in your dock at the bottom and opens up a full screen spread of all of your applications with a search bar at the top. As this is a minimal development ISO of Manjaro you won’t find a whole host of applications installed out of the box but you will find things like a web browser and some of Cutefish’s applications. One of these is there file manager which has a very simple interface and follows the unified look of Cutefish.

All in all it’s still very early on in the development for Cutefish but I think this is a desktop definitely worth keep an eye on as it progresses. Manjaro have done an excellent job getting packaged into a community edition ISO and I’m sure we will be seeing plenty more about this desktop in the future.

Step 2: While the system would restart and initialize start pressing F9 (or Del or F10 or F12 or Esc) to display Boot Menu. The key could be different on different make and model, try other keys as per Make and Model of your machine.

Step 3: From the Boot Menu, select Flash Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter. It may be at different serial number in different systems. Wait for the system to Boot from the Flash Drive.

Step 4: Select Boot with open source drivers and then wait until you enter the Manjaro Cutefish.

Step 5: After you boot, there’s a welcome window that has an option to Install Manjaro Cutefish, select Launch installer.

Step 6: This screen is the first one you will see when starting the installer. You can select your language from the Language menu then click Next. Also, if you different from the recommended settings, such as not being connected to the Internet or not being plugged in, this is where you will receive a warning.

Step 7: You can select your time zone by either clicking on the map close to your location or by browsing the Region and Zone menu, then click Next.

Step 8: Next, you will be able to choose your keyboard layout. Choose your language in the list to the left and then the desired subcategory in the list to the right. This will ensure the characters you type are the same on the screen as they are on your keyboard, then Click Next.

Step 9: It will then be time to decide which method to use to partition your hard drive. The selected hard drive is displayed at the top of the window. Left of it is an indication stating if it uses BIOS or UEFI. The partition table type, MBR or GPT, is indicated at the right of the disk. The current state of your drive is displayed at the bottom of the window. Several partitioning options are available. The options presented depend on the state of your drive and may not all be available at the same time. in my case i will choose Erase Disk to install Manjaro Cutefish.

Step 10: Next, you will be asked for your name, a username to log in the system, the name of your computer as it will be seen by others on the same network as you, and a password. The password must be entered twice to make sure there are no typos. Finally, you can decide whether or not you want to be asked your password when logging in and if you want to use the same password for the administrator account. Recommended settings are already selected. Unless you really prefer it another way, we suggest you leave it as is. then Click Next.

Step 11: As the last step before the installation takes place, you will be presented with a short summary of all the choices you made in the other sections, Make sure the partition scheme is to your liking, as this is the point of no return. then click Next.

Step 12: Dialog will appear asking if you wish to proceed with the installation. Once you click on Install now, you will no longer be able to edit the partition scheme and all data stored on the partitions you chose to overwrite will be lost.

Step 13: You can now kick back and let the installation proceed! While the installation takes place, a slideshow will present you some key features of your new operating system, Manjaro Cutefish.

Step 14: The installation is now done! To restart your system immediately and boot into your new operating system, select Restart now and then click Done.

Step 15: Once you reboot, you’ll be greeted by the lock screen.

Step 16: Once you have logged in you will be presented with the Manjaro Cutefish desktop. The Manjaro Cutefish Hello welcome screen will load automatically and this gives you some useful links to documentation, ways to get help and support from the Manjaro community, and some ways you can get involved with the project.
