Use Entire Disk to Install Mageia 8 on PC - Operating System Linux Distribution

Recently I wrote about Kali Linux. In this tutorial, we’ll see how to install Mageia 8 Linux on Computer as main OS.

The latest Mageia 8 is available as a "classic installation" variant that lets you install it but not trying it beforehand, "Live Media" editions with a live environment you can use to test it, and optionally install it, and a very small (just 50 MiB) "Network installation" image. The "Live Media" images are available in variants with KDE Plasma, GNOME and Xfce.

Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux distribution which is discontinued permanently few years ago. Mageia is the community driven, non-profit project developed by a group of former Mandriva developers. It is currently becoming the most popular successor of Mandriva Linux distribution and holds the ‘sixth’ rank in Distrowatch. Unlike Mandriva, which is commercial entity, Mageia is completely free and open source. Mageia 8 is the good distro for those who are looking for modern and elegant mandriva based OS. Mageia is shaped for its users, and is therefore suitable in any environment: work, home, servers, leisure etc.

DOWNLOAD MAGEIA 8 LINUX AND ETCHER TOOL

You need an ISO image of Mageia 8 Linux. You can Download it from the Official Mageia 8 Linux download page. You also need a 16GB USB drive which will be used as a bootable installation medium.

To install Mageia 8 Linux, you need to write your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to create the installation media. This is not the same as copying the ISO, and requires some bespoke software.

For this tutorial, we’ll use balenaEtcher, as it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Choose the version that corresponds to your current operating system, download and install the tool.

CREATE A BOOTABLE USB STICK

Step 1: Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: Double-click on the balenaEtcher download file to run the app. Press Flash from file to select the downloaded Mageia 8 ISO file on your computer.

Step 3: Press Select target and choose the correct USB flash drive from the list.

Step 4: Press Flash! to begin writing Mageia 8 Linux to the USB flash drive.

After a few minutes, the USB flash drive will be ready for booting into Mageia 8 Linux.
