How to Install MX Linux 21 on PC - Full Disk Installation Step by Step


MX Linux is certainly one of the popular mid-weight Linux Operating System. It relies on the excellent upstream work by Linux and Open-Source Community. It has a underlying design that combine an elegant and efficient desktop with simple configuration, high stability, solid performance and medium-sized footprint. 

Most importantly, MX Linux provide a stable OS with easy and flexible installation process. It has excellent hardware recognition with automatic configuration for most users. The strong open source community supporting MX Linux regularly updates important applications which run on MX Linux. A user may install MX Linux in a number of ways such as Single Host, Dual Host or Guest Operating System.

MX Linux project is made possible by the collaborative efforts of AntiX and former MEPIS Linux communities. It is a desktop-oriented Linux flavor that provides XFCE as the default desktop environment – although you can get it in KDE Plasma and Fluxbox.
MX Linux is a middleweight Linux distribution that combines a colorful and efficient desktop with rock-solid stability and superb performance. The latest stable version of MX Linux is MX Linux 21, codenamed Wildflower. It is based on Debian 11 Bullseye and ships with all the latest software updates and goodness for an amazing and elegant desktop distribution.

For this installation, the following are the recommended system requirements:
  • A Intel or AMD processor
  • Memory – 2GB and more.
  • Storage – 20 GB and more
  • USB disk for installation on a Physical machine.

To install Mx Linux 21, you need to write your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to create the installation media. This is not the same as copying the ISO, and requires some bespoke software.

For this tutorial, we’ll use balenaEtcher, as it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS. Choose the version that corresponds to your current operating system, download and install the tool.


CREATE A BOOTABLE USB STICK

Step 1:
 Insert the USB flash drive into your computer.

Step 2: Double-click on the balenaEtcher download file to run the app. Press Flash from file to select the downloaded Mx Linux ISO file on your computer.



Step 3: Press Select target and choose the correct USB flash drive from the list.


Step 4: Press Flash! to begin writing Mx Linux to the USB flash drive.


After a few minutes, the USB flash drive will be ready for booting into Mx Linux.

INSTALL MX LINUX 21 ON PC

Step 1: While the system would restart and initialize start pressing F9 (or Del or F10 or F12 or Esc) to display Boot Menu. The key could be different on different make and model, try other keys as per Make and Model of your machine.

Step 2: From the Boot Menu, select Flash Drive as Boot Device and Hit Enter. It may be at different serial number in different systems. Wait for the system to Boot from the Flash Drive.


Step 3: If MX Linux boot from USB flash drive, MX Linux Boot Menu will be displayed as shown below, Hit Enter key on first option to start MX Linux Live Session. MX Linux Live Session will Load from Flash Drive.


Step 4: This will boot into the live installation environment and a dialogue pop-up window will appear with an array of options to choose from. Since our objective is to install MX Linux, click on the Install MX Linux option.


Step 5: A new Window will appear where you can change the keyboard settings. Keep the default option and click Next to process to next step.


Step 6: In disk partition, You can use the entire disk as I did, then click Next.


Step 7: Confirm that you want to format the partition by clicking on Yes.


Step 8: The installation will commence as shown.


Step 9: Sit back patiently as you wait for this process to complete, once done, you will proceed as below to set the computer name and domain, then click Next.


Step 10:
 Next, set the timezone.


Step 11: Then create a user and set your preferred password, then click Next.


Step 12: Now wait for installer to finish.


Step 13: Once done, click Finish and wait for operating systerm to reboot.


Step 14: When the system reboots, you are required to eject/unplug the installation media and press Enter to proceed.


Step 15: Wait 5 seconds to continue.


Step 16: Log in to MX Linux with the credentials you created.


Step 17: On successful login, you will see this welcome window.

UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM AFTER INSTALLING MX LINUX

The first thing you need to do after installing MX Linux is updating your system. Even though you just installed it, the ISO you used might have been old. As such, there should be some pending updates for the installed software and packages.

Now launch the terminal from the App Menu.


Since MX Linux is built on Debian 11, let’s try and update the system using:

sudo apt-get update

Followed by your password.


Now try this:

sudo apt-get upgrade


You can press y to accept and continue.
